Monteriggioni

In the second decade of the thirteenth century the Republic of Siena founded the Castle of Monteriggioni as protection of its borders against Florence, the rival city. Both cities fought for the region's control on numerous occasions throughout the centuries until the capture of the city of Siena in 1555.
The Monteriggioni’ s fall in 1554 anticipated the fall of the founding city; Giovannino Zeti, captain of the Sienese troops, surrendered to the Florentines that attacked and besieged the base of the hill on which stands our fortress.
The walls survived many attacks and sieges throughout its history and afterwards in the sixteenth century the fortress lost its function of defensive fortification. Following the final collapse of the Republic of Siena in Montalcino in 1559, all the Sienese dominions passed to Florence.
