In March 1944 a group of partisans made their base at a farm, Casa Giubileo, in the woods of the Montagnola Senese, with the aim of carrying out actions to combat the troops of Nazi-fascism. At dawn on March 28, a large group of soldiers, tipped off by a local spy, surrounded the farmhouse and, after a shoot-out in which two partisans died, 19 young men were captured and barbarously executed at the nearby site of La Porcareccia. In 1997, to commemorate what was one of the most tragic events in the Liberation struggle in Tuscany, Casa Giubileo was declared an official Commemorative Site (Sacrario della Memoria).
