Not far from the hermitage of S. Leonardo stands the so-called Pyramid, an obelisk to the memory of the eighteenth century draining of the area below, which is still known today as the Pian del Lago [the Lake Plain].

In March 1944 a group of partisans made their base at a farm, Casa Giubileo, in the woods of the Montagnola Senese, with the aim of carrying out actions to combat the troops of Nazi-fascism.

This is the place where 19 young partisans were shot dead in 1944, an episode also known as the Montemaggio Atrocity.
