Setting out from the castle of Monteriggioni, we go as far as the foothills of the Montagnola, crossing Valmaggiore and skirting attractive views and pretty woodland paths. After a few sections where the surface of the path is even, and uphill (but these can be negotiated also by dismounting and pushing the bike), you come to a resting-place, from where you can enjoy an especially beautiful view of Monteriggioni Castle, and visit the ancient Etruscan site of Campassini, of which there remain a few faint but important traces.
The existence of ancient roads and carriageways encouraged the development of sites connected to human traffic and the transit of goods, as shown by a 16th century osteria, Il Mandorlo, and the ancient place-name Camminata.
Leaving behind the woodland part, after a brief section of the SS2 Cassia, the route winds its way among the vineyards and cultivated fields of Podere Il Santo, forming a natural setting in which the Castle of Monteriggioni greets cyclists and provides refreshment.
Here too, in the final section, for keener cyclists, there is the chance of cycling along the challenging arrival of the “Gran Fondo Castello di Monteriggioni” route.
