To discover the delightful borgo of Monteriggioni, we give you some useful advice and tips to make the most of your visit.
The main entrance is the majestic Porta Franca (or Porta Romea), located in the base of a tower facing towards Siena. After passing through the gate, a short section of road brings you straight into the heart of the castle, the broad square called Piazza Roma, with the church of S. Maria Assunta on on side. Alongside this parish Church, we recommend a visit to the small museum called “Monteriggioni in Arme”, which will help you to understand the military history of the borgo, but which is also suitable for children and families who just want to have fun wearing the armour of an ancient knight on horseback. Don’t miss the walkways along the top of the town walls, with breathtaking views over the glorious countryside on all sides, and a stroll through the lanes and little squares, where fountains and wells stand to remind us how vital it was, in times of siege, to have large reserves of water. If you’re really curious, we suggest a stroll along the road that runs outside the outer walls, looking for ancient inscriptions, walled-up entrances, and the arrow-slits which soldiers once fired weapons out of.
