Cultural itineraries

To discover the delightful borgo of Monteriggioni, we give you some useful advice and tips to make the most of your visit.

Are you a fan of the famous video game? Come and discover for yourself the castle of Monteriggioni, the place where the magnificent feats of Ezio Auditore are set.

Setting out from the church of Pieve a Castello, now deconsecrated, after a few kilometers you come to the borgo (hamlet) of Abbadia Isola.

This itinerary takes in several fortified sites in the Monteriggioni area, evidence of the feudal and military past of these lands, some of which are mentioned in Dante.

This itinerary begins at Villa Bichi Borghesi at Scorgiano, first built in the 17th century by the family of the same name.

Situated just north of Siena, and on the western border of the Chianti region, Monteriggioni boats a particularly excellent position for discovering some of the most significant places in the countryside around Siena.

The central position of Monteriggioni, situated in the middle of Tuscany, makes it easy to explore the numerous wonders of this beautiful region, and the nearby Chianti area must certainly be one of these.
Itineraries on foot

The tour follows some of the routes of Via Francigena, the ancient network of routes which intersected the Montagnola, both on the valley bottom (if the weather permitted it) and higher.

The Via Francigena is the ancient pilgrims’ route to the tomb of St Peter in Rome.

This is certainly the most intense tour, excursionwise as well as culturewise.

This round tour is rather short and pleasant, and covers the north-west area of the Montagnola facing the Val d’Elsa.

This is a tour of great historical and religious interest. Start off at Fungaia and hike on very mild inclines towards S. Colomba and S. Leonardo al Lago.
Cycling around

Setting out from the castle of Monteriggioni, we go as far as the foothills of the Montagnola, crossing Valmaggiore and skirting attractive views and pretty woodland paths.

Setting out from the Castle of Monteriggioni, the route goes over some parts of the Via Francigena.

Setting out from the Castle of Monteriggioni, the first part of the route is also the longest section.

This cycling path begins behind the municipal town hall at Monteriggioni, situated at La Colonna (locality) north-west of the castle of the same name.

The cycling and pedestrian path connects the villages of San Martino and Tognazza.
On a trip with your whole class

For school groups, we recommend a visit to the two largest sites in the area, Abbadia Isola and Monteriggioni, which are connected by a lovely footpath.

Immediately outside the borgo of Abbadia Isola, not far from Monteriggioni, you take the Strada del Giubileo (unsurfaced), which winds its way through the woods of the Montagnola.
