MEDIEVAL PILGRIMS AT THE TIME OF THE BATTLE OF MONTAPERTI. Re-enactment of a medieval pil

When: 19 June - 21 June

This is, in outline form, the programme of the historic re-enactment that the Municipality of Monteriggioni organises for June 20-21.

Friday, June 19

8:30 p.m. Strove: Dinner show organised by the “Tavola del pane” and by the Teatro delle Stanze: pilgrim’s inn, food and drink journey along the via Francigena of yesterday and today.

Saturday, June 20

8:00 a.m. Badia Isola: convening of participants invited to take part in the re-enacting portion of the event.

8:15 a.m. Badia Isola: bus leaves for San Gimignano.

9:00 a.m. San Gimignano: the participants in the re-enactment dress up at the former jail. Some experts in medieval tailoring will help the pilgrims wear the historic clothes and the related footwear.

10:30 a.m. Departure from San Gimignano towards Badia a Coneo in the municipal territory of Colle Val D'Elsa.

11:00 a.m. Departure of the group of “contemporary” pilgrims who will observe from a distance the unforeseen events met by the re-enactment participants.

1:30 p.m. Arrival at the “Torraccia di Chiusi” after many adventures; here a resident will offer the pilgrims some victuals and a quiet shelter after the various tense moments experienced along the route.

6:00 p.m. Arrival in Badia a Coneo where a military camp will be erected to protect the group. Following the tradition, supper will be served before sunset. Those who are not members of the re-enacting group will only be allowed a visit to the camp and to the church that will shelter the pilgrims for the night.

Sunday, June 21

8:00 a.m. Reveille and breakfast within the camp.

9:00 a.m. Departure of the enacters from Badia a Coneo.

9:30 a.m. Departure of the “civilians” from Badia a Coneo.

1:00 p.m. Arrival at the hamlet of Fabbrica where a group of escorting soldiers will prepare a frugal meal for all.

3:00 p.m. Arrival in Badia Isola for a brief stop with entertainment.

4:30 p.m. Arrival in Monteriggioni.

Sunday, June 21

(Institutional Programme)

3:30 p.m. Welcoming address from Monteriggioni’s Mayor.

Presentation of the project of the six Municipalities of the Valdelsa starting with the Councillor in charge of Tourism of the Tuscan Regional Administration, followed by the Civil Servant, and finally by the Mayors involved.

4:30 p.m. The authorities welcome all pilgrims and the Regional Councillor stamps their credentials.

5:00 p.m. Official presentation of the magazine “Via Francigena” by the President of the European Association of the “vie Francigene” with an address from the director of the Cultural Institute of Europe’s paths and from the Minister’s representative.

6:00 p.m. The Civita Association describes the plan for Badia Isola’s museums’ complex.
